Small Outside / Field notes

Privacy policy

Your expeditions belong to you. Here is what stays on your iPhone, what you can choose to share, and how this website works.

Effective date: 6 October 2026

The short version

Small Outside does not collect data from your use of the app. It works offline, without an account, advertising, tracking, or an analytics service. Your expedition records stay in the app’s storage on your iPhone.

This policy covers the Small Outside iPhone app and this support website. The developer and contact for privacy questions is Dmitry Bondarchuk, dvbondarchuk@gmail.com.

Data on your iPhone

The app stores your expedition history (including dates, duration, and completion status), saved tickets, optional short notes and selected photos, recent ticket history, and preferences such as reminder time. These are used on your device to provide the app’s features.

The app does not send these records to the developer. It does not use GPS, location tracking, HealthKit, step counting, a user account, third-party SDKs, or cloud sync.

Records remain until you delete them; the app does not automatically prune your Atlas.

Optional photos & reminders

A photo is optional. The system photo picker provides only the image you select; Small Outside does not request access to your entire photo library or camera. It resizes and saves a JPEG copy without the original EXIF or GPS metadata. Anything visible within the image remains visible.

Daily reminders are optional local notifications. Permission is requested only when you enable them. Their schedule is kept on your device and is not sent to a server.

Exports & device backups

Export happens only when you choose Settings → Export local data. The JSON file contains your expedition records, saved tickets, notes, and selected photo copies. You choose its destination in the system file picker. A cloud storage provider you choose may process that file under its own policy.

Import reads the file you select and adds validated records after confirmation. The app does not automatically upload or share your data.

Although Small Outside has no cloud sync, iOS device backups may include its local data depending on your settings. Apple explains this in What does iCloud back up? Backups and Apple’s services are managed under your device settings and Apple’s privacy policy.

Your privacy choices

  • Finish any expedition without a note or photo.
  • Delete individual Atlas entries and remove saved tickets.
  • Use Settings → Delete all local data and confirm to remove expedition records, saved tickets, photo copies, and recent ticket history, and to turn reminders off.
  • Use Settings → Export local data to make your own copy.
  • Manage notification permission and device backups in iOS Settings.

Deleting the app rather than offloading it removes its local storage. Exported files, photos in your original photo library, and existing device backups are separate: manage them in their respective storage locations. The developer has no access to your Atlas and cannot recover a deleted local record.

If you email support

If you contact support, the developer receives your email address, message, and anything you choose to attach. This information is used to respond to your request and resolve the issue, and is not used for marketing or sold.

The lawful basis, where the GDPR applies, is the legitimate interest in providing the support you request; information may also be retained where necessary to meet a legal obligation. Support correspondence is retained only for as long as needed to handle the request, relevant follow-up, or those obligations.

Email is processed by the email providers involved. The developer’s support address uses Gmail; see the Google Privacy Policy, including information about international processing and safeguards. Your own email provider’s policy also applies. You do not need to send your Atlas or private photos to get help.

This support website

This static website has no advertising, analytics scripts, tracking pixels, contact forms, embedded third-party media, or cookies or local storage set by its code. Fonts and styles are served with the website.

The website is hosted on GitHub Pages. GitHub logs and stores visitors’ IP addresses for security purposes, as explained in its GitHub Pages documentation. GitHub processes hosting information under its Privacy Statement. Clicking an external link or sending an email uses the destination service and its policy.

Questions, rights & changes

For privacy questions or requests concerning support correspondence, email dvbondarchuk@gmail.com. Depending on applicable law, you may request access, correction, deletion, restriction, or portability of personal data, and object to processing. There is no developer-held copy of your on-device Atlas to retrieve or erase.

Where applicable, you may complain to your local data protection authority; in the Netherlands, this is the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens. The European Commission provides an overview of data protection rights.

If the app’s practices change, this policy and its effective date will be updated. Any new data handling will be explained before it takes effect in the app.
